Tricon CX is a flexible SIL3 platform designed for the protection and mitigation of risks in high-hazard industries where safe and continuous operation are imperative. Tricon CX is capable of handling input/output (I/O) counts of all sizes, from as little as 16 I/O channels in a single system to in excess of 750,000 I/O channels when deployed across 254 nodes. Systems can be centralized in one location, as well as distributed across multiple assets. All modules are fault tolerant and continue to operate even under fault conditions.The simple mechanical design of Tricon CX makes it quick and easy to design, install, operate and maintain. Only three components are required to configure a Tricon CX system — the chassis, the modules, and the connectors. Modules and connectors are separate, so modules can be replaced online without disturbing the I/O modules or wiring. Chassis are designed for panel mounting or 19” mounting. No swing frames are required. Frontaccess only is 

required — there is no need for rear access to any of the Tricon CX racks, modules,or connectors.I/O modules and connector boards are keyed to prevent incorrect insertion. Termination panels are supported and can be usedwith Tricon CX for maximum interoperability.The integrated 24 Vdc power management and fusing simplifies power distribution, requiring less wiring, less engineering, less testing, and lower overall cost.

A lifetime of flexibility

Tricon CX delivers a lifetime of flexibility without compromising on safety. It can adapt as your needs change, providing a platform for your immediate, as well as future needs. Tricon CX standardly supports the existing Tricon I/O bus. Additionally, a high-performance 1Gigabyte I/O bus delivers outstanding end-to-end performance, from input to controller to output. Each Tricon CX processor set can integrate upo 15 Tricon CX I/O chassis and 90 Tricon CX I/O

modules (~2,880 TMR I/O channels). Up to 254 Tricon CX systems can be networked together, meaning a Tricon CX solution can handle in excess of 750,000 TMR I/O points. Tricon CX I/O buses support multiple media formats including RS485, and fiber optic Ethernet, allowing you to select the media type that best fits the application or environmental requirements.

Tricon CX can be applied to both centralized or distributed applications, put the I/O where it is needed.

Centralized and distributed architectures 

The flexible system architecture means that you can have physical separation and put safety where you need it. Tricon CX I/O can be located centrally and in remote locations. Star networks are supported. Fault-tolerant communications ensure integrity and continuous operation even in the unlikely event of a fault condition.

Peer-to-peer communications 

Up to 254 nodes can be networked together on a fault-tolerant, SIL3-certified, peer-to-peer network.The use of peer-to-peer communications reduces the need for hard-wired interlocks between safety systems, reducing the associated cable and installation costs.

Central system management

Programming, diagnostic information, and sequence of event (SOE) information can all be managed from a central location, no matter where the Tricon CX systems are located or distributed making it easier and more efficient to manage your safety systems.

Delivering continuous operation

The TÜV-certified Tricon CX SIL3 system delivers the highest levels of safe operation and maximum plant availability throughout the operating life of the plant. Tricon CX combines the best of the world’s most proven Tricon and Trident platforms and can be used in both low- and high-demand modes. Inherent high integrity and high availability is built into the systems. Diagnostics and redundancy management are transparent to the user. The system adapts and maintains SIL3 even under

fault conditions. The TMR design ensures no single point of failure. The 2oo3D (two out of three diagnostic) architecture and voting eliminates spurious trips, increases plant uptime, extends plant maintenance cycles, and lowers operational costs.

Unlike other safety systems, voting and diagnostics are built in — no user logic is required. There is no need for redundant I/O modules to achieve fault tolerance. The use of a hot spare is not required to increase mean time to failure. Each Tricon CX system contains three physically separate main processor modules that continue to operate even under fault conditions. The system supports adaptive voting 3-2-1-0 or 3-2-0. Processor modules can be replaced online without stopping operation. Each Tricon CX system can accommodate up to four communications modules in two redundant pairs. Each module is physically separate, so can be replaced online if required without halting operations. Each I/O module is triplicated by design. Redundant I/O modules are not required to achieve fault tolerance. I/O modules are fault tolerant and continue to operate even under fault conditions. Modules can be replaced online, switch over is automatic, and redundancy management is transparent.
