The Hirschmann MM3-2FXS2/2TX (Belden Part Number: 943 730-101) is a hot-swappable, 4-port Fast Ethernet media module designed exclusively for the MICE (Modular Industrial Communication Equipment) switch series (MS20 and MS30).

By offering a hybrid interface of both single-mode fiber and copper connections, this module enables industrial networks to adapt to evolving physical infrastructure demands without requiring a complete hardware overhaul.

Unique Product Description

The MICE series represents one of the most successful modular industrial switch concepts ever designed. Rather than deploying fixed-port switches, the MICE platform utilizes a central backplane (such as the MS20 or MS30) that accepts slide-in media modules like the MM3-2FXS2/2TX.

This module features 2 Single-mode fiber ports (100BASE-FX, SC connectors) designed for long-distance trunk lines up to 30 km, alongside 2 Twisted-Pair copper ports (100BASE-TX, RJ45) for localized device integration. This exact hybrid architecture bridges local control cabinets to distant control rooms with zero signal degradation.

Application Cases

1. Long-Distance Pipeline Monitoring (Water & Gas Utilities)

In geographically distributed processing networks, pumping stations can be separated by tens of kilometers. The MM3-2FXS2/2TX is slotted into MS30 switches inside remote pump cabinets. The 2 TX copper ports connect local PLCs and flow meters, while the 2 FXS2 fiber ports form a redundant, high-voltage-immune single-mode fiber ring linking stations back to the central SCADA facility up to 30 km away.

2. Heavy Industrial Gantry & Crane Systems

In large logistics ports or steel mill cranes, high-voltage motors generate significant electromagnetic noise. By using the single-mode fiber lines of the MM3-2FXS2/2TX for the main communication trunk, the network remains completely isolated from electrical noise, while the local copper ports plug directly into the motor drive controllers on the carriage.

Installation and Maintenance

The physical installation is highly simplified to allow field-level technician servicing:

Module Insertion: Align the plastic guide rails on the MM3 module with the open slot of the MICE switch chassis (MS20 or MS30). Slide the module in firmly until you hear the locking tabs click on the top and bottom.

Securing the Unit: Hand-tighten the integrated retaining screws on the front panel to secure the mechanical mounting against severe cabinet vibration.

Cabling Sequence:

Fiber: Clean the single-mode SC fiber tips using a dry fiber click-cleaner, remove the protective dust caps from ports 1 and 2. and plug in the fiber connectors.

Copper: Insert standard shielded Cat5e/Cat6 RJ45 cables into ports 3 and 4.

Maintenance Swapping: If a port is physically damaged, loosen the retaining screws, pinch the locking tabs, slide the module out, and slide a replacement MM3-2FXS2/2TX directly in. No switch reboot or backup restoration is required.
